Marketing Gone Overboard

I was reviewing a Product Approval form this morning from one of my clients. We made a surfactant product and used the salt curve to increase the viscosity.
They gave the Product 5 out of 5 in all categories we assess. However they then reject the Formulation with the following note; "We would like to remove the Sodium chloride. We feel that many of our clients are wishing to limit their salt intake."

It was. Now I am trying to parse my response so that I can explain to them it is a non-issue and I can get the product approved.

yeah, that sounds about par for the course

at least they didn't approve it, pay for all the testing, commit to an order and then bottle out at the last minute because they  want more tweaks, which seems to be a favourite tactic among our customers

My new favorite comment came yesterday. I was speaking with a young lady and she wants to manufacture her product herself. I said that she should follow cGMP standards if she does so. She stated that she did her research and nowhere does the FDA mention cGMP. I offered to send her the links. She insisted that there is no use of cGMP in Cosmetics. I said I know there is and I have been doing this awhile. Her answer was "I am an English Major and I know how to research on Google."

  • I have attended a 'feasibility meeting' not so long ago.

We were asked to play buddhist meditation music during the manufacturing in order to imbue positive energy into the product.

    I'm not joking.
The project never materialised for far more down to earth reasons.

    Wow!

I remember once we had a client that wanted to use a special "laser" aligned water from the Ukraine. Once the product was made, they wanted the pallets arranged in line with the magnetic North Pole to protect the "alignment" of the water.

    These are amusing stories.

I had a potential client who wanted me to make an "addictive" lip gloss ... Her partner was an attorney.

I've had clients reject using ECOCert ingredients because they did not like the way the name of the ingredient looked on the label.

And, I've had a potential client quiz me about my spirituality prior to deciding if they wanted to work with me or not.  Thank goodness I did not have to hum Mantras to Buddha as I made the samples.

Chemist/Microbiologist formulating in the Organic & Naturals arena under ECOCert/Natural Products Assn/Whole Foods/National Organic Program guidelines focused skincare & haircare products.

I once had a client want me to call "the people that assign the INCI names" and get them to change the INCI name of Hemp Oil (Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil). She loved the material but felt some her client would be put off since it was listed as marijuana.

Highly amusing! I was just putting some peyote balm on my foot this morning. I rather doubt that there's much peyote in it.
