Food grade modified starch used in cosmetic

Dear friends,

Due to starch shortage, a client, who uses a cosmetic grade modified starch in some emulsions (Hydroxypropyl starch phosphate), wants to know if he can use the same ingredient, but food grade.

Both the original and the cosmetic grade ingredient have the same technical name (only the food grade doesn't show it in its technical documents, only in its website and brochures...but obviously, not as an INCI name). Also, both ingredients have similar physical characteristics (pre-gelatinized, waxy, particle size, solution pH, moisture). We run some tests, and emulsions behave similarly.

The question is if it's possible to use this food grade ingredient in a cosmetic, or if there's some regulation  that doesn't allow it.

Thank you all for your help!

  • Thank you @MarkBroussard! That's a relief.
  • I and others, use ingredients from bulk supplements on a regular basis.  Some would contend, that food grade is a better grade.... As in... Something that goes in you, might be held to a higher standard than something that can just go on you.  :)

    Aloha.

Aloha @Graillotion! My thoughts precisely. Just wanted to make sure I'm not screwing up by overlooking any law, especially in aproduct that will sit on a supermarket shelf, waiting to be scrutinized by competitors and health authorities  :D
  • If you are in the USA...cosmetics is still pretty much the wild wild West.  Keep the PCB's, glyphosate and Leucidal products out, and all is good.  :D
