  • Approximate Cost of Deformulation Analysis Report?

    Approximately (very roughly) how much would labs charge for a deformulation analysis of a body lotion product?

    Ideally, the lab report sought would identify and quantify the overall water versus non-water percentages in the formula and then identify and quantify the percentages of the non-water ingredients.
    The objective is not to knock off the product but rather to use the data as a starting point in formulating a new product with quite a few different ingredients than the benchmark chemically analysed and deformulated product but with similar rheological characteristics.
    Any rough cost estimates, suggestions, and comments would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    Rather than asking what is the cost, perhaps better to ask how long will it take to breakdown a formula. And a first cut breakdown should be able to be done fairly quickly in say an hour or so. But to test it then you have to make it up, say another hour or so (assuming you have all of the ingredients) and then compare it to the benchmark. Perhaps it needs a further sample. So allow another hour or so.
    The cost would then be down to amount of time and what someone might charge and that is obviously going to vary quite a bit.

    The level of precision your seem to be inquiring about would require some sophisticated analytical laboratory analysis of the reference product, which could be quite expensive.

    You would probably get information relevant to your needs from a typical deformulate with a good chemist guesstimating ingredient percentages from the LOI.  It will not be accurate, but the inaccuracies would probably not make a difference in terms of a consumer noticing any major differences.
