I always see hydroxyethyl cellulose in leave on applications as the sole
gelling agent, but I never see hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as a sole
gelling agent in leave on applications. I only see HPMC in surfactant
    systems (rinse off applications).

My question is if your going to
make a gel (leave on) product is there any reason why it is not advised to only
use HPMC? Would it affect the absorption of ‘actives’ in your product?

    Thanks, Dan V.

I suspect it’s down to product aesthetics/skin feel more than anything else; HEC gels have short flow and are well suited to skincare, while HPMC gels have long flow and are better suited to surfactant systems
