Germogard ECT

Hi, first post and thank you for this forum.
I have just started using a preservative as I only made for family in small batches and used citric acid and refrigerated the lotion. Now I am looking at scaling up so need to use one. I chose Germogard ECT for my lotion which is 30%, oil to 65% distilled water, 5% essential oil and olivem 1000 emulsifier.
I was told Germogard is odourless but it has a strong smell of almonds and even at 1% adds that odour to the lotion. Probably not bad if I use sweet almond as one of the oils and a complimentary fragrance but it isn't what I expected. Is it normal to smell that way?

TIA
Caz

  • Hi there did you say 30% preservative ? With the vanilla/almond smell. I believe it may be 3 to 4 % you use. Also 5% EO should be enough to block the almond odour. Or you could use Vanilla & coconut or lime which may mix nicely with the scent.

  • Thanks Catherine, The macadamia, jojoba and avocado oils are 30%. I tried Geogard at 1% and 3%.  Essential oils plus olivem is 5% so it was actually only a few drops of Lime and Lavender EO in the 100ml test batches but I only want it very lightly fragranced. Is it correct that Geogard has this strong almond odour? Perhaps I should try another preservative.
  • What type are you looking for? Natural or organic?

I am hoping for something as natural as possible, acceptable to vegans.
  • Ok if you want to go organic you may as well try Leucidal & AMP-cide. It is a double preservative. Leucidal is a fermented plant and the other is derived from coconuts. Try this link Hope this helps.

  • @CazP How old is your Geogard ECT? It sounds as though the Benzyl Alcohol has oxidised to benzaldehyde which gives it the almond odour.
