Salicylic Acid

edited January 7 in General

A company here in Holland is selling uncoated asprin tablets to use as salicylic acid.
Can you really use acetylsalicylic acid instead of salicylic acid, just like that?

  • No.

Acetylsalicylic acid has very poor stability in solution and will quickly decompose into acetic and salicylic acids - this is all very well if your intention is to have salicylic acid but you will also have an accompanying strong smell of acetic acid.

In addition to that, the tabletting process normally involves other materials in order for the tablet to hold together. These additives may not be wanted in the product you are making.
  • Ok, very clear. Thanks!
